KUCHING: The Orang Ulu community has been given the honour of hosting this year’s state-level Gawai Dayak celebration.
The appointment, based on a rotational system, was made during a meeting chaired by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas here today (Mar 10).
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala was appointed as the organising committee chairman and will form his working committee to finalise the celebration dates and programmes.
Uggah, who chairs the main committee for this year’s celebration, said the event would be a golden opportunity for the Orang Ulu community to showcase their rich culture and traditions.
Reflecting on last year’s successful celebration led by the Bidayuh committee, Uggah commended the improvements made and thanked those involved from both the public and private sectors.
“The spirit of working together among the Bidayuh, Iban and the Orang Ulu Communities had been inspiring. It proved that we can achieve a lot with our unity and the ability to work together.
“I hope this spirit will continue to manifest itself in all that we do together in the years ahead and not just confined to the Gawai Dayak celebration,” he said.
Uggah added it is crucial for all parties to sit down, discuss, consult one another, and contribute their best efforts to ensure continued progress.
