SIBU: Sabah and Sarawak have important rights guaranteed under the Federal Constitution.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief, Kevin Lau said the statements of several political leaders from Peninsular Malaysia who opposed Sabah and Sarawak’s bid to obtain 35 per cent of the parliamentary seats therefore disregarded the spirit of Malaysia’s founding.
“The establishment of Malaysia is the result of the union of the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak. Although the Constitution can be amended by a two-thirds majority in Parliament, Sabah and Sarawak must have a mechanism to ensure their rights are protected.
“A ratio of at least one-third or 35 per cent of the seats in parliament is a fair arrangement to ensure that our voices are heard and respected,” he said at the Mid-Autumn Festival Night organised by the SUPP Bawang Assan Branch’s Women’s Wing at the Sa’ati hall in SUPP premises here on Monday (Sept 29).
In this regard, Lau, who is also SUPP Bawang Assan Branch Chairman urged all party members and Sarawakians to remain united in upholding the state’s rights and fighting for a fair political position for future generations.
Commenting on the event, he said the meaning of the festival’s unity was in line with the spirit of unity in the party because only with consensus and firm goals can the trust of the people and voters be gained.
“The Mid-Autumn Festival symbolises unity, harmony and peace, thus becoming an important moment for branch members to strengthen ties and strengthen the spirit of cooperation,” he said.
Also present at the event were Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew and SUPP Bawang Assan Branch’s Women Wing Chairperson, Katherine Wong.
