Over 1,000 athletes take to the field at MSSD Kuching 2025

Student-athletes from across Kuching stand united in anticipation at the opening of the MSSD Athletics Championship 2025.

KUCHING: Over 1,000 student-athletes from 64 schools across the district converged for the Kuching District School Sports Council (MSSD) Athletics Championship 2025, held from May 21 to 22.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Sen,g officiated the event on behalf of the Deputy Premier of Sarawak cum Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Wee delivered a heartfelt address filled with encouragement, recognition, and support for youth sports development in Sarawak.

Commending the Kuching District Education Office and the organising committee, Wee described the two-day championship as a “commendable achievement” that showcases the education community’s dedication to nurturing the character and potential of young Sarawakians.

“This is indeed a commendable achievement that reflects the education community’s strong commitment to nurturing the potential and character of our young Sarawakians,” he said during the opening ceremony at Sarawak State Stadium today.

He then emphasised that sports play a vital role in holistic education, promoting not only physical health but also discipline, teamwork, mental resilience, and fighting spirit.

“This championship provides the perfect platform to discover young talents, while fostering unity and school pride,” he noted, urging students to embrace the opportunity with good sportsmanship and determination.

Wee also acknowledged the organisers’ efforts in mobilising resources and stakeholders to ensure the success of this large-scale event.

“I understand that the organising committee has submitted a request for financial assistance to Datuk Amar’s office in support of this championship.

“The Sarawak Government has always been committed to initiatives that contribute to the holistic growth of our younger generation,” he said.

The championship serves as both a competitive arena and a celebration of community spirit, with strong support from educators, parents, and volunteers.

“We envision a future where our children are not only academically successful but also healthy, competitive, and of high moral character – in line with Sarawak’s aspiration to become a developed state by 2030.

“In conclusion, I once again congratulate all who have worked hard to make this championship a success.

“With great joy, strong hope, and on behalf of Datuk Amar, I am honoured to officially declare open the Kuching District School Sports Council (MSSD) Athletics Championship 2025,” said Wee.
