KUCHING: A wave of solidarity swept through the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) compound as more than 1,000 participants took part in the ‘Walk With Me (WWME) 3.0’ today (Feb 23).
Organised by the Society for Cancer Advocacy and Awareness Kuching (SCAN), the event aimed to raise public awareness about cancer — a real-life battle affecting one in four Malaysians — while showing support for those impacted by the disease.
With a mission to foster unity and support, it brought together cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals in a heartwarming display of care, love, and empathy.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) deputy mayor Datuk Dr Zaiedi Suhaili praised the overwhelming response while emphasising the importance of public participation.
“The response this year has been very encouraging. We always encourage more public participation to not only raise awareness but also to promote a healthier lifestyle.

“We at MBKS are fully committed to supporting such initiatives, and we are happy to see many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) using this space to advocate for important causes like cancer awareness,” he said when met by Sarawak Tribune after flagging off the six kilometre (km) run category.
He added that such events, especially large-scale marathons, often attract participants from across the globe, not just within Malaysia.
“This aligns with our goal of promoting Kuching as a healthy city while also boosting tourism by drawing visitors from outside Sarawak.
“We fully support this initiative as it is part of our broader effort to cultivate a healthier community. At the same time, we remain committed to keeping our city clean and vibrant,” he said.
Meanwhile, SCAN president Chris Cheng expressed his gratitude to MBKS and event sponsors for their support.
“We deeply appreciate MBKS for their support, not only for this event but for many others as well as they have consistently championed cancer awareness in the past, and we are truly grateful for their commitment,” he said.
