KUALA LUMPUR: More than 1,000 tonnes of various types of drugs valued at over RM1.1 billion were seized across the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur last year, highlighting the persistent threat of drug trafficking and abuse in the urban community.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said statistics from the Kuala Lumpur Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) showed that drugs weighing a total of 1,085,013 kilogrammes, with an estimated value of RM1,105,880,738, were confiscated during the period.
In addition, a total of 20,540 suspects were arrested in connection with 18,352 cases involving drug trafficking, possession and abuse.
“At the same time, firm action was taken against 498 individuals identified as repeat offenders under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory prison sentence of up to five years and up to three strokes of the cane,” he said at a press conference here today.
To further curb drug trafficking activities, he said 77 syndicate members were also detained under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985.
He added that property seizure actions were also carried out under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988, involving assets valued at RM14 million, including land, houses, vehicles, cash and jewellery.
Fadil said the disposal of seized drugs and investigation papers was also conducted for the period from 2009 to 2024, involving 24,149 drug case exhibits weighing a total of 2,185 kilogrammes and valued at RM44 million.
“A total of 3,527 investigation papers dating from 1993 to 2016 have also been disposed of in accordance with established procedures,” he said.
He added that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), particularly the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), will continue its efforts to combat drugs, which remain the country’s number one enemy, and called on the public to share information on drug trafficking activities via the NCID Hotline at 012-208 7222. – BERNAMA
