KUCHING: More than 10,000 people visited the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) Vessel Visit programme at Pending Public Wharf over the weekend.

The two-day event, held from Oct 11 to 12 in conjunction with the 79th official birthday of the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, featured four naval ships, namely KD Kelantan, KD Badik, KD Rencong and KD Paus, open to the public.

Lieutenant Commander Norhisham Mat Jawi said the programme was aimed at strengthening public awareness of TLDM’s role and showing its operational readiness in safeguarding Malaysia’s maritime sovereignty.

“This visit showcases TLDM’s capability and readiness while also strengthening its bond with the people of Sarawak and reaffirming its role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime sovereignty and security.

“At the same time, we hope this visit will inspire youths and parents alike to consider careers in uniformed services, fostering a sense of discipline, patriotism, and love for the nation,” he said when contacted by Sarawak Tribune today (Oct 12).

He added the presence of these TLDM assets also signals the upcoming establishment of the Naval Region 2 Headquarters (MAWILLA 2), which will soon be built in Muara Tebas, a strategic move to enhance maritime defence in Malaysia’s eastern region.

Visitors were also briefed on the roles of the participating vessels. KD Kelantan, part of the 26th Patrol Vessel Squadron, is equipped for long-range offshore missions, while Littoral Mission Ships KD Badik and KD Rencong are designed for coastal patrols.
