KUCHING: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) office here opened two investigation papers and seized over 12 tonnes of underweight 1kg packet cooking oil during inspections at two premises in Sejingkat on Friday (Feb 6).
Sarawak KPDN Director Matthew Dominic Barin said the action followed a public complaint lodged through its e-complaint portal alleging that the packaged cooking oil did not meet the stipulated weight.
“A total of 125 samples were weighed using a Class II high-precision pre-packaged weighing scale, with all samples found to be below the required 1kg, recording an average weight of 0.9791kg.
“As a result, 12,410kg of packaged cooking oil valued at RM31,025 was seized from both premises,” he said in a statement.
He said action was taken under Paragraph 7 of the Trade Descriptions (Quantity Marking for Prepackaged Goods) Order 2023 for failing to comply with the permitted tolerance limit.
“Sarawak KPDN welcomes complaints from the public and other agencies in efforts to protect consumer rights and ensure there is no manipulation of the contents of controlled goods by irresponsible parties.
“As such, distributors and traders are advised to comply with existing laws and regulations,” he added.
