JAKARTA: More than 1,200 security personnel were deployed in Jakarta yesterday to ensure order was maintained during a protest near the parliament complex, police said. Central Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro in a statement said the force, which included police, soldiers and local government officers, was not carrying firearms.

The demonstration involved several community alliances voicing concerns over policies perceived to affect the public.

“We want to ensure the event proceeds safely and in an orderly manner, without disrupting other public activities,” he said, adding that the operation would be conducted in a persuasive and humane manner.

Members of the public were advised to avoid the parliament area and use alternative routes, with traffic controls adjusted as needed. – BERNAMA
