KOTA SAMARAHAN: Two men, including a foreign student, were arrested after police seized over 1kg of suspected cannabis in separate raids here on Thursday (Apr 16).

Acting Kota Samarahan police chief DSP Barry William said the suspects were arrested at a mail centre and a student service centre at a local higher learning institution.

A 27-year-old local man was first detained at about 2.30pm, where police seized multiple packets of compressed dried plant material believed to be cannabis weighing 1,095.01 grammes, estimated to be worth RM3,285.30.

A follow-up arrest led to the detention of a 23-year-old Pakistani man at about 2.35pm in the same area.

“Initial urine screening found the local suspect positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, while the foreign suspect tested positive for benzodiazepine,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

Police also seized various items believed linked to the activity, including packaging materials, a vape device and a mobile phone.

Initial investigations revealed the local suspect admitted ownership of the drugs and said he had been involved in drug abuse since 2015.

He also admitted to using methamphetamine and Erimin 5, which he obtained from suppliers in Peninsular Malaysia via postal delivery.

The second suspect, however, denied taking any drugs and denied involvement in drug abuse.

Both suspects are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the penalty of life imprisonment and whipping, as well as Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act.

They are currently being held in custody, and a remand application will be made to assist further investigations.
