Over 200 families ring in New Year at PPS as floods hit Kuching

KUCHING: New Year floods have driven nearly 1,000 people from their homes into six temporary relief centres (PPS), with evacuation numbers still climbing as rising waters inundate residential areas across the district.

As of 4:00 pm today (Jan. 1), a total of 945 evacuees from 226 families have been relocated to six PPS activated in Kuching.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said four of the centres were opened in the early hours of today, between 12:00 am and 7:00 am, following worsening flood conditions.

Flood-hit areas include Taman Desa Wira, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Kampung Sungai Batu, Kampung Surih Iban, Taman Malihah and Kampung Sejijak.

This is followed by PPS Dewan Serbaguna Taman Malihah, which has taken in 265 individuals from 69 families, and PPS Dewan Masyarakat Satok, sheltering 203 people from 55 families.

Meanwhile, PPS Dewan Surau Nurul Najhin in Stapok is accommodating 56 evacuees from 18 families, PPS Surau Ar-Rahman in Kampung Sungai Batu has 63 individuals from 14 families, and PPS SK Chung Hua Sejijak is sheltering 33 people from 10 families.

SDMC said several centres are recording an increase in evacuees, while others remain under close watch as conditions continue to be monitored by relevant agencies.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to remain vigilant, comply with instructions from authorities, and move immediately to designated relief centres if directed.
