KUCHING: More than 29,000 Year Six pupils across Sarawak are sitting for the Ujian Penilaian-Dual Language Programme Sarawak (UP-DLPS 6) on October 15 and 16, marking another key milestone in the State’s commitment to strengthening English proficiency and STEM education.

The assessment, introduced by the Sarawak Government through the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, is conducted in collaboration with the Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS) and the Examinations Syndicate (Lembaga Peperiksaan) of the federal Ministry of Education (MOE).

A total of 1,050 primary schools is participating in this year’s UP-DLPS 6, which evaluates students’ mastery of science and mathematics taught in English, as well as the English Language subject: all key components of the state’s DLP.

All UP-DLPS 6 examination papers have been vetted and verified by Cambridge University Press and Assessment to ensure international-level validity and reliability.

This collaboration reflects Sarawak’s continued effort to align its education standards with global benchmarks while maintaining its local relevance and inclusivity.

According to Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, the UP-DLPS serves as a crucial instrument for measuring learning outcomes and identifying areas for further improvement.

“The implementation of UP-DLPS 6 marks an important milestone in Sarawak’s journey to enhance science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and English language proficiency,” he said.

“Through this assessment, we can objectively evaluate students’ performance and design targeted intervention programmes to strengthen the quality of teaching and learning in DLP schools.”

Sagah expressed appreciation to the JPNS, MOE, head teachers, educators, and parents for their steadfast support in ensuring the smooth implementation of UP-DLPS 6.

Additionally, he said their collaboration exemplifies Sarawak’s united commitment to building a globally competitive education system under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030.

He also conveyed his best wishes to all candidates sitting for the test.

“I am confident that our students will perform well and showcase Sarawak’s growing strength in STEM and English education,” he said.

For the record, the UP-DLPS 6, first introduced as part of Sarawak’s education transformation agenda, continues to underscore the State’s vision of producing future-ready students equipped with both linguistic and scientific competencies to thrive in an increasingly globalised world.
