SIBU: As of September 30, there have been 509 dog bite incidents within the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) jurisdiction.

SMC chairman, Clarence Ting Ing Horth, said that this average translates to approximately 1.8 people being bitten by dogs daily here.

“It is important to note that this statistic does not include data for October, as the records are not yet available.

“The total does not reflect those who did not seek medical attention,” Ting said when chairing the full council meeting at SMC headquarters yesterday.

Ting also highlighted that the SMC is proactive in catching stray dogs, with an average of 95 dogs captured each month.

“However, capturing and neutering stray dogs is not a foolproof solution, as a neutered dog can still inflict bites,” he added.
Ting urged dog owners to confine their pets to their property and to prevent them from roaming freely, which poses a risk to public safety.

“We need the community’s full cooperation to address the issue of stray dogs effectively,” he said. “Letting pets roam outside contributes to the risk of spreading rabies, a dreadful disease, which we must work diligently to stop it.”

Also present were the SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, and the secretary, Yong Ing Chu.
