BAU: The Sarawak Government has approved over RM500 million for Phase 2 of the Jalan Bau Lama upgrade project, which will transform the existing road into a dual carriageway to complement the Pan Borneo Highway.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the project, carried out in two phases, is aimed at enhancing road connectivity to Bau and boosting tourism through improved infrastructure.
“Both Datuk Henry (Tasik Biru assemblyman) and Datuk Lo Khere Chiang (Batu Kitang assemblyman) approached me with the proposal to upgrade Jalan Bau Lama into a dual carriageway.
“I did some quick calculations and agreed. Just for Phase 2 alone, it will cost over RM500 million,” he said.
He said this when officiating at Bau’s 205th Anniversary Celebration in conjunction with Pesta Tasik Biru and Tasik Biru Resort City here today.
Abang Johari added that he took the drive to Bau himself to personally assess the road conditions.

“It’s been a while since I drove, and I wanted to experience the road myself. I can say the road is in very good condition.
“Once the upgrade is complete, Bau will have two major access routes – the Pan Borneo Highway and the new dual carriageway through Siniawan – which will certainly help attract more visitors to this historic town,” he added.
Transport Deputy Minister, Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, thanked the Premier for approving the funding needed to carry out Phase 2.
“Phase 1 is already underway, and with the Premier’s approval of over RM500 million, Phase 2 will begin soon.
“We hope both phases will be completed as scheduled,” he said.
