KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has defended Sarawak’s healthcare transformation efforts and reaffirmed support for the state’s independent Public Health Master Plan, launched in April 2025.

He alluded to the latest criticism levelled by Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong, who questioned the effectiveness of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian ’s benchmarking visits abroad and alleged neglect of rural healthcare in Sarawak.

“Dr Sim’s overseas benchmarking visits are not for show, they are strategic investments in knowledge to bring back best practices to transform Sarawak’s healthcare.

“Real reform demands foresight, planning and the courage to learn and lead. As someone who walks the ground daily with constituents, I can say confidently that what people want are better services, not political distractions.

“That is why I fully support the Sarawak Public Health Master Plan — a bold initiative launched in April 2025, fully financed by the state government,” he said in a statement.

He pointed out that Sarawak is the only state in Malaysia to undertake such a comprehensive and independent approach to healthcare development.

“This initiative reflects not just Dr Sim’s commitment, but also the GPS-led government’s ability to govern with vision and responsibility.

“The implementation of this plan is already underway — focusing especially on rural and remote communities.

“Let us not forget: healthcare is fundamentally a Federal Government responsibility. That includes the building and upgrading of clinics, especially in rural Sarawak,” he added.

Yap said Sarawakians do not want personal attacks, unproductive drama, or finger-pointing without substance.

“Sarawak needs leaders who build, not break down; who offer solutions, not slogans; who take responsibility, not take cheap shots for publicity,” he said.

He added that it is crucial to stand united in strengthening Sarawak, instead of creating division for political gain.

“The future of Sarawak’s healthcare lies not in politicising every issue, but in putting the rakyat first. I urge all elected leaders — let us match our words with work, and our positions with purpose,” he said.
