KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) has stepped in to assist victims of a pre-dawn fire at the 13th Mile, Penrissen Road today, which affected three houses and displaced about 17 residents.
PMC Chairman Tan Kai, accompanied by Temenggong Datuk Tan Joo Phoi, community leader Datuk Jacky Chai, and members of the rescue team, visited the scene shortly after being informed of the incident to assess the situation and extend support to the affected families.
During the visit, the delegation met the victims, listened to their accounts of the blaze and the difficulties they now face, and conveyed words of comfort.
They also presented daily necessities and financial assistance to help the families cope with their immediate needs – reflecting PMC’s commitment to community welfare and post-disaster support.
The fire, which broke out at around 4.00 am, briefly caused panic among residents.
One corner house was almost completely destroyed, including several vehicles, leaving a family of more than 10 members homeless, while two neighbouring houses sustained varying degrees of damage.
No casualties were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Speaking at the site, Tan Kai said the council would continue to monitor the condition of the affected households and coordinate further assistance where necessary.
“The fire has caused significant losses and disrupted the lives of the residents. PMC will do its best within our capacity to support them during this difficult period,” he said.
He also called on community members, charitable bodies and relevant agencies to continue extending support to the victims, while expressing appreciation for the swift cooperation that enabled relief efforts to run smoothly.
The affected families expressed gratitude to PMC and the visiting team for their prompt concern and assistance, and hoped that with continued support, they would be able to rebuild their lives and recover from the ordeal.
