KOTA PADAWAN: Since 2024, the total number of properties under Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) have risen to 81,356 properties.

It is a significant increase and a clear sign of ongoing development and progress in its jurisdiction.

PMC Chairman, Tan Kai, said from the total, residential properties account for the majority at 91 per cent, with commercial properties comprising seven per cent, and industrial properties just two per cent.

“While this growth is promising, it also highlights a clear opportunity.

“There is ample room for us to expand our commercial and industrial sectors.

“By encouraging balanced development, we can enhance economic opportunities, generate more employment, and ensure long-term sustainability for our community.

“In order to accommodate and promote this rapid development in PMC jurisdiction, in 2024, we have introduced a fast-track building plan approval process for the commercial and industrial sectors,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the swearing-in ceremony for PMC members, officiated by Deputy Premier cum Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, at its building here today.

In terms of the number of properties, Tan said the council now holds the highest count in Kuching.

“This reflects not only rapid development but also the growing population within our jurisdiction.

“With more residents, comes greater responsibility, and our focus is on delivering better facilities and services to meet their needs,” he added.

He then stated that it is essential for the council to enhance or upgrade recreational spaces and community facilities.

“These are not just amenities; they are essential spaces for people to connect, unwind, and build a sense of belonging in the neighbourhoods they call home.

“On that note, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Dr Sim for his strong support in assisting to secure funding for ‘Projek Rakyat’ which have been instrumental in helping us develop and improve our area,” he added.

As PMC continues to develop rapidly, Tan said its workforce must also grow in both size and capability to keep up with the demands of managing such a dynamic area.

“In addition to addressing these challenges, we also aim to enhance the digitalisation process to improve efficiency, and make the best use of our limited sources and streamline key process.

“This effort aligns with one of the key enablers that will support Sarawak’s aspiration towards becoming a developed state under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030) digital transformation,” he added.
