TELUK MELANO: A potential ferry connection between Pahang and Sarawak could open up new tourism opportunities, with the service possibly positioned as an exclusive travel experience rather than a regular commuting route.

Tanjung Datu assemblyman, Azizul Annuar Adenan, said the idea of reviving a concept similar to the former Feri Malaysia was not impossible and could complement the growing tourism potential of Sematan and Telok Melano.

“It is not impossible for us to revive a concept like that. In my personal opinion, we could make it an exclusive trip rather than a commuting service,” he said when met by reporters at Masjid Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah here today.

Azizul said the concept could be explored while taking into account the approximately 600-kilometre distance and maritime conditions along the route.

“We know that a distance of 600 kilometres is very far if you are using a ferry travelling at only 10 or 15 knots. It would take considerable time, and unstable sea conditions would make the journey even more challenging.”

Nevertheless, Azizul said stronger connectivity between Sarawak and Pahang, whether by sea or air, could potentially be realised in the future.

“I believe what His Royal Highness was conveying in his remarks was that the bond between Sarawak and Pahang is indeed very close. It is also not impossible that some form of link or connection, whether by ferry or air, could be realised in the future,” he added.

Azizul said plans had previously been considered to develop a port or long jetty in the Sematan-Tanjung Datu area to support tourism, including catering to cruise ships.

He also said such infrastructure could complement further tourism development in Sematan and Telok Melano, where several resort projects are being pursued

“We had previously planned to further develop the tourism industry here by constructing a port or a long jetty that could cater to cruise ships and others,” he added.

Azizul said a resort is currently under construction at neighbouring Kampung Telok Serabang while another resort development in the Sematan area is expected to have its earth-breaking ceremony during Rimba & Run on Sept 6.

The event is expected to be launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Azizul added that these developments were in line with the Premier’s vision and private-sector investment in developing the tourism potential of Sematan and Telok Melano.
