NEW DELHI: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed solidarity with Iran as the country continues to face US-Israeli military attacks.
Shehbaz spoke to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to convey Eid Al Fitr and Nowruz festival greetings to him.
“As a neighbouring brotherly country, I expressed Pakistan’s solidarity with the brave Iranian people, conveyed deep condolences on the loss of precious lives, and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured and displaced,” Shehbaz said in a post on X on Monday.
“We discussed the grave situation in the Gulf region and agreed on the urgent need for de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy. I also underscored the importance of unity in the ranks of the Ummah and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to playing a constructive role in advancing peace in the region,” he said.
Meanwhile, Pakistan is working with key regional players to de-escalate tensions even as the ongoing US and Israeli attacks are certain to provoke further retaliation by Iran against the two adversaries and their regional assets.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on the evolving regional situation, the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
“Both leaders reviewed the latest developments in the region, including the recent announcement by the US President regarding a temporary halt in hostilities,” it said on X, referring to Donald Trump’s announcement earlier that he had asked the US military to postpone for five days attacks on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure.
Iran had warned earlier it would target power and water desalination plants in Israel as well as in the countries allied with the US if its energy facilities came under attack.
Dar and his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein also discussed the war in a phone conversation and expressed concern over its wider implications. – BERNAMA
