ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the government to form a medical team to examine jailed former prime minister, Imran Khan, after he complained of 85 per cent vision loss in his right eye, his lawyer said, the German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
The 73-year-old former leader has been in jail since 2023, following his conviction on multiple graft charges, including the theft of expensive gifts he received from other countries during his rule from 2018 to 2022.
Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, told media in Islamabad that Khan had developed an infection in his right eye months ago that led to rapid vision loss.
Supreme Court Chief Justice, Yahya Afridi, this week ordered Safdar to meet Khan and submit a report on his health, the lawyer said.
Safdar held a three-hour meeting with Khan in his jail cell and told the court on Thursday that Khan’s right eye was rapidly losing vision.
A former sport star turned politician, Khan remains popular in Pakistan despite his party failing to win elections in 2024.
The government has restricted Khan’s meetings with his family members and lawyers during the last six months. The court also ordered the government to allow him to talk to his sons who live in London. – BERNAMA-dpa
