SELANGOR: Sarawak won three gold medals as the para badminton squad signed off from Para SUKMA Selangor 2026 in style today.
The haul comfortably surpassed the squad’s initial target of two gold medals set before the Games.
The three titles came through Nursyazwani Shahrom in the women’s singles SL4, a standing class for athletes with lower-limb impairment; Ashley Irenaeus Jeck in the men’s wheelchair singles WH2, for wheelchair athletes with lower-limb impairment; and the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 pairing of Nursyazwani and Gregory Kanyan, which combines athletes from different standing classifications.
The achievement capped a strong campaign for the squad under the guidance of experienced coach Suhaili Laiman.
Suhaili said he was happy and slightly excited with the team’s performance, particularly after the players managed to go beyond the target set for the Games.
“Happy and a little excited because we managed to finish our campaign this time with three gold medals.
“Basically, we have exceeded our initial target of two gold medals,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
Suhaili also congratulated the players who contributed to Sarawak’s medal tally, saying their efforts and commitment throughout the competition deserved recognition.
He also expressed his admiration for the players’ performances, praising them for their determination to give their best throughout the Games.
The three-gold haul provided a fitting conclusion to Sarawak’s para badminton campaign at Para SUKMA Selangor 2026 after five days of tournament (Sept 6-10) at Dewan Kombes, Shah Alam.
