Parade of Lights draws thousands to Kuching Festival

KUCHING: The Kuching Street Parade 2025, themed “Parade of Lights”, was held in grand fashion at Padang Merdeka yesterday evening (Aug 16) as part of the annual Kuching Festival 2025 celebrations.

This year’s parade featured around 52 contingents comprising 2,000 participants from various government agencies, the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Kejiranan Mesra (KJM) groups, and institutions of higher learning.

Present at the event was Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who represented Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Each contingent showcased its own creativity through dazzling light displays, musical performances, cultural dances, and colourful costumes that reflected the cultural diversity and harmony of the people of Sarawak.

In the Government Department category, the Sarawak Land and Survey Department emerged as the champion, followed by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) in second place and the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) in third.

In the Open/Private and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) category, Legend of Lights – The Glorious 40s clinched first place, while Amanah Khairat Yayasan Melayu Sarawak and Kasuma Tari took second and third place respectively.

For the Open/KJM/Institutions of Higher Learning category, Sarawak Skills College secured first place, with UNIRAZAK Sidma College Sarawak finishing second and the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) of Kampung Tabuan Lot in third.

Meanwhile, in the decorative floats and vehicles category, Brotherhood Community Club won in the bicycle segment, MYUS Autotech Sdn Bhd topped the motorcycle category, and the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Sarawak branch) took first place in the vehicle category.

Each first-place winner received RM5,000, while the second- and third-place winners received RM3,000 and RM2,000 respectively.

More than 5,000 visitors thronged the streets of Kuching to experience the vibrant and illuminated atmosphere of the Kuching Street Parade 2025 – Parade of Lights.

The Kuching Street Parade remained one of the most anticipated highlights for both city residents and visitors from within and outside the country since its inception in the 1990s.
