SIBU: The long-standing parking shortage faced by residents of the Anne Saging longhouse in Pasai Siong here will soon be resolved following the commencement of construction on a new parking facility.

The project was officially handed over to the contractor on Wednesday, witnessed by a team led by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman Kevin Lau Kor Jie, together with engineers from the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC).

Lau said residents of the longhouse have endured inadequate parking facilities for many years. Through the Bawang Assan Special Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) Fund, arrangements were successfully made to construct a dedicated parking area for the community.

He said the site handover marked the official start of the project, which aims to improve traffic management in the area and enhance safety for residents and road users.

Lau added that during the Gawai Mangkung Tiang celebration organised by the longhouse in June last year, residents had raised concerns over the lack of proper parking facilities, which had led to traffic congestion and safety risks.

In response, engineers from the SRDC, with the assistance of Jeksen Chuban, conducted a site inspection to assess the situation and propose suitable improvement measures.

“I am pleased that the project is now able to proceed smoothly and hope that residents would continue to work closely with all relevant parties to ensure the project progresses well and is completed on schedule.

Lau, who is also SUPP Youth Central chief, added that his team would continue to monitor and oversee the project until its completion to ensure construction quality meets the required standards and delivers long-term benefits to residents.
