CHUKAI: A part-time instructor lost RM872,290 after falling victim to a fake investment on social media in June.
Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said that on April 24, the 59-year-old man came across an advertisement promoting the investment on Facebook and contacted the investment company.
“The suspect, who introduced herself as Annabelle, added the victim to a WhatsApp group called Wealth Explorer and then instructed him to download an app supposedly to deposit his investment profits.
“The victim used his savings, including funds from Tabung Haji, and even pawned gold to make 21 investments via transfers to 11 bank accounts between June 4 and Aug 8,” he said in a statement today.
He said the victim lodged a police report yesterday, after realising that he had been scammed, having received only RM1,000 in return for the total investment.
“The case is being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code,” he added.– BERNAMA
