KUCHING: The strength of a long-lasting political party lies in its ability to foster leadership that remains relevant at all times while adapting to ever-changing circumstances.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg expressed confidence that Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) will continue to sail forward with unity as its core foundation, backed by leaders who evolve with the times.

Citing historical examples from India’s Congress Party and Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, the party president warned that even parties with long, storied histories can falter if they fail to adapt internally.

He said young leaders must embrace the unwavering unity between the Pesaka and Bumiputera factions, recognising that political and governmental stability are crucial as Sarawak progress towards development.

“The PBB has a strong cultural bond between Pesaka and Bumiputera, which has been established for many years. This is why new, young leaders must understand and embrace this culture.

“They must also recognise that political and governmental stability are crucial as we progress step by step towards development.

“I have advocated for contemporary leadership, which is leadership that remains relevant at all times but adapts to changing circumstances,” he said.

He told the media this during a press conference after officiating at the opening ceremony of the PBB 16th Triennial General Meeting at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today (Feb 15).

Reflecting on the global political dynamics, Abang Johari stressed the importance of understanding shifts beyond Sarawak and Malaysia.

“We cannot be confined to just Sarawak or national politics. We must also consider what is happening in ASEAN countries as the first step.

“When we come together as a regional bloc, we can play a significant role in stabilising global changes.

“The leadership we nurture must take into account global developments because the situation has changed,” he added.

In his speech earlier, Abang Johari said that as PBB nears its 60th anniversary in the coming years, the party’s continued longevity will rely on the commitment of its members and the support of the people of Sarawak.

As such, he stressed the need for a unified spirit and determination.

“We have conducted studies, and we found that many long-lasting parties have fallen because their spirit fades, and internal strife causes the party to become weakened.

“For us in PBB, we must maintain a unified spirit and determination.

“I believe that with this spirit, PBB will continue to have a long life, steadfast in its commitment to the people of Sarawak,” he said.
