KUCHING: The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has welcomed the appointment of Pay & Go Sdn Bhd as the new Smart Parking System concessionaire for Kuching, as announced by the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government.
DBKU Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said the commission strongly supports the ministry’s initiative in awarding both DBKU and the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) as the solution providers under the new concession.
“This collaborative approach represents a significant step forward in enhancing parking management services within Kuching city,” he said during the Smart Parking launching ceremony held at the MBKS Building yesterday (Oct 28).
The implementation and transition phase of the Smart Parking System will begin on Nov 1, coinciding with the expiry of the existing parking concession under Kuching City Parking System (KCPS) Sdn Bhd.
Hilmy commended the ministry for introducing a 10-year concession period, calling it a sustainable framework for developing a modern, data-driven and efficient parking management system that aligns with Kuching’s long-term growth and Smart City aspirations.
The new Smart Parking System will feature advanced technologies such as a GPS-enabled Pay & Go mobile application, handheld devices and QR-coded parking notices for a seamless user experience.
License plate recognition (LPR) cameras will also be installed on enforcement e-bikes and vehicles to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
“DBKU is confident that this system will significantly improve user convenience through cashless and contactless payments, strengthen enforcement, and ensure greater transparency in revenue management,” Hilmy said, adding that it will also provide valuable data insights to support urban mobility planning and smart city development.
Hilmy also stated that the Smart Parking initiative marked a transformative step for Kuching — one that embodies a shared vision of a progressive, connected and people-centred city.
“Through innovation and collaboration, we are not only enhancing parking convenience and operational efficiency but also laying the groundwork for smarter urban mobility, better data-driven decision-making, and a greener, more sustainable environment,” he said.
“Together with the support of our citizens, partners and stakeholders, we will continue to drive Kuching toward a future that is smarter, more efficient, and truly world-class,” he added.
