KUCHING: Motorists in Kuching South and Kuching North will soon enjoy a more convenient and efficient parking experience with the introduction of the Smart Parking System by Pay & Go Sdn Bhd, beginning with a trial phase on November 1.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the company has been appointed as the solution provider and concessionaire for the Smart Parking System within the jurisdictions of both the MBKS and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).

He said the implementation will begin with a trial phase on November 1 before moving into full operations by January 2026.

“This transition coincides with the expiry of the current parking concession under the Kuching City Parking System (KCPS).

“The new concession period will last for 10 years, with the option of a five-year extension subject to performance review and mutual agreement,” he said during the Smart Parking launch held at the MBKS Building on Tuesday.

Wee said the Smart Parking System represents a modern, efficient and data-driven approach to parking management, aimed at improving user experience and enhancing enforcement.

“It is designed to improve user convenience, strengthen enforcement efficiency and enhance revenue collection by local authorities, in line with Sarawak’s Smart City and Digital Economy initiatives,” he said.

He added that parking rates will remain unchanged, including those for season and reserved parking.

“The introduction of the Smart Parking System marks a major step towards the digitalisation of municipal services in Sarawak and greater efficiency in urban management,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wee said MBKS and DBKU, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government and the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), will closely monitor the trial implementation to ensure a smooth transition.

“Public awareness campaigns will also be carried out to guide users on registration and how to use the system, demonstrating Sarawak’s continued leadership in adopting smart city solutions,” he added.

On outstanding parking compounds, Wee said that despite the introduction of the new system, fines must still be settled with the respective councils.

“To encourage settlement of outstanding compounds, we are currently offering a 50 per cent discount within a specified period.

“As a council, we strive to remain user-friendly and ensure all processes run smoothly, including maintaining existing parking rates to ensure fairness for all,” he said.
