KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth urged former federal law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim to issue an open apology over his recent remarks describing Sarawak and Sabah as a “burden” and suggesting that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) be voided.

PBB Youth said Zaid’s comments, made in a viral video, had offended people in both states and created unnecessary tension over long-standing constitutional rights.

The wing also criticised Zaid’s response to Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, Political Secretary to the Premier, noting that he refused to acknowledge any misstep in tone and insisted he was entitled to his views.

“MA63 is the cornerstone document of Malaysia’s formation, and its provisions must be honoured without further dispute.

“Any rhetoric suggesting that Sarawak and Sabah should be given ‘independence’ — or cast aside after 62 years in the federation — is an extreme view and could even be regarded as inflammatory.

“We urge the authorities and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take the necessary action to safeguard harmony and public order,” PBB Youth said in a statement.

The wing said investigations should also cover individuals who attempted to undermine Sarawak’s sovereignty, regardless of their position or background.

PBB Youth further reminded the public to exercise caution when commenting on Sarawak’s rights and special position to avoid inflaming sensitivities.

While welcoming healthy debate on the nation’s direction and federal-state relations, the wing said it would not remain silent when Sarawak’s rights were openly challenged.

“We call on Datuk Zaid Ibrahim to issue an open apology to the people of Sarawak and Sabah without delay to ease tensions and preserve public order.”
