SIBU: The facilities of Peace Methodist Church at Jalan Apollo here have been upgraded for the comfort and safety of its members.
The project involved a total cost of RM100,000 under the Pelawan Constituency Rural Transformation Project (RTP).
Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, said the project involved replacing aluminium louvre windows with glass windows to prevent rainwater from entering the building and enable the upper floor to be fully utilised for various community activities.
He said the project also included ceiling repairs, waterproofing, the installation of downlights and other maintenance works, all of which had been successfully completed according to plan.
“The replacement of the windows with glass has made the upper floor more rainproof and suitable for activities such as playing table tennis and various community programmes.
“Overall, this RM100,000 project has been fully completed, and I am satisfied with the quality of the work and the final result achieved,” he said during a visit to the project site at the church on Friday (July 31).
However, he said an inspection found that there was still a water leakage problem on the top floor of the church building.
In this regard, he said he was considering implementing another RTP project to carry out waterproofing works on the affected part so that the problem could be resolved comprehensively.
Elaborating further, Tiang who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, said the four-storey church, which had about 300 members, played an important role as a community centre, particularly in newly developed housing areas.
He stressed that the state government had previously assisted the church through several large-scale upgrading projects.
As the constituency representative, he said he was seeking to channel additional allocations towards smaller improvement projects that could have a significant impact on the local community.
“In my area, the church is not only a place of worship but also functions as a centre for community activities, strengthening community relations and providing various programmes, including senior citizen welfare.
“This role is very important in building a harmonious community,” he added.
