MIRI: A pedestrian died after a hit-and-run collision on Jalan Kuala Baram Batu Satu, Kuala Baram Bypass late Saturday night.

Police are appealing for call for public assistance to identify both the driver and the victim.

Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said officers were alerted at about 11.32 pm on Nov 1 to the collision involving an unidentified vehicle and a man believed to be in his 40s or 50s.

Early findings show the man had been walking along the left shoulder of the road when he was struck from behind. The driver did not stop and left the scene.

The victim was taken to Miri Hospital for emergency treatment but died at 2.30 am the next day.

Members of the public reported seeing the man earlier the same night wandering near the crash location.

He was wearing a multicoloured striped T-shirt, dark jeans and sports shoes. His identity has yet to be confirmed.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by dangerous driving, a charge that carries a heavy penalty.

Mohd Farhan urged anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage from the bypass at the time to come forward immediately.

“We need assistance from the public. Any information, no matter how small it may seem, could help us identify the vehicle, the driver or the victim,” he said.

Those with information can contact Traffic Investigating Officer Inspector Mohammad Amiruddin Hamdan at 018-9529957, the Miri district police headquarters at 085-433400, or any nearby police station.

Police are also working to trace the victim’s family and are urging anyone who may recognise the description or is aware of a missing relative to get in touch with investigators.
