MIRI: A night out turned tragic when a local man was found dead by the roadside in a suspected hit-and-run near KPJ Specialist Hospital, Jalan Dato Sri Joseph Balan Seling, here earlier today.

The incident happened at around 2:00 am when the victim and a colleague had earlier been drinking at a premises in Permyjaya and were walking home to Krokop.

Miri Police chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, in a statement, said that both of them were believed to be intoxicated.

“At some point, the victim was left walking alone. Upon reaching the traffic light area near a PETRONAS petrol station, the colleague realised the victim was no longer with him and later found him lying by the roadside.

“The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was sent to Miri Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death,” he said.

Police have classified the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Investigations are ongoing to identify the suspect involved.

He also reminded the public to lodge police reports immediately in the event of an accident, and that they should drive responsibly as well as obey traffic rules to ensure the safety of others.
