KUCHING: Penang FC head coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail hailed his side’s resilience in securing a point against a “near-perfect” Kuching City FC, saying the result reflected their character and growth.

At a post-match press conference after the 1-1 draw at Sarawak State Stadium on Saturday night, Wan Rohaimi  praised his players’ discipline and determination throughout the intense encounter.

“Alhamdulillah, our mission coming here was to get at least a positive result, and we achieved that. Credit must go to all my players who fought hard to earn what we got today,” he said.

He acknowledged Kuching City’s strength, describing them as one of the most complete teams in the Malaysian Super League.

“We know Kuching are almost perfect in every department. It’s not easy to match them for 90 minutes in Kuching,” he added.

Both sides scored in the first half, with Penang taking the lead through Tchetche Kipre before Ronald Ngah Wanja equalised from a VAR-awarded penalty.

“Both teams created chances. Dylan Christopher’s chance at the end could have changed the outcome, but it’s okay. What’s important is that my players learn from this and continue improving,” said Wan Rohaimi.

He credited his team’s tactical awareness and discipline for holding their ground against a dominant Kuching side.

“In football, you need space and time, and that’s what I emphasised to my players, especially when facing a strong team like Kuching.

“We cannot afford to give them too much of either,” he explained.

Looking ahead, the Penang coach hopes to maintain momentum as they prepare to face Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) in the Malaysia FA Cup quarter-final second leg.

“It won’t be easy playing at JDT’s home, but we want to carry this spirit and fighting character into the next match.

“At least we want to match JDT for the full 90 minutes in the second leg,” he said.
