PART of Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong’s speech in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) has been officially expunged from the Hansard.
DUN speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar made the ruling during the DUN sitting yesterday following a formal objection raised by Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
In reiterating his objection made earlier, Fazzrudin pointed to remarks made by Yong on pages 60 and 63 of the unpublished Hansard.
He cited Standing Order 32(6), which states: “No member shall impute improper motives to any other member or make any statement of allegation which the said member is not prepared to substantiate.”
According to Fazzrudin, the repeated references to “Abang Jo” and “Adik Jo” implied improper motives and were suggestive of specific individuals, even if no names were explicitly mentioned.
“Although she may argue that these terms were not directly aimed at any individual, it is evident — particularly from the perspective of the layperson — that such language is suggestive and alludes to a specific person.
“This form of innuendo, though veiled, reveals an intent that breaches the decorum expected under Standing Order 32.
“Therefore, I respectfully seek a ruling from Tuan Speaker on this matter, and request that the aforementioned remarks by YB Pending be expunged from the Hansard,” he said.
Following consideration of the objection, the Speaker ruled in favour and ordered the expungement of the relevant paragraphs from the official record.
