KUCHING: PERKATA Special School hosted a heartwarming Teacher’s Day celebration today at its school compound, honouring the dedicated educators of special needs students.
The teachers were celebrated for their unwavering patience and dedication – qualities that have helped their students grow, achieve milestones, and even succeed beyond the classroom.
“The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book,” said school principal, Wendy Mandau.
Some students have gone on to represent the school at the Special Olympics, bringing home medals.
Before and during the event, students, accompanied by their class assistants, went around handing out personalised crafts they had made in class.
One of PERKATA’s experienced teachers, Georgina Paul Bronnie, who has been with the school for 29 years, shared her joy.
“This year’s celebration is a little more special than previous ones, as the school, in collaboration with parents, has prepared awards to be presented to the teachers,” she said.
Some of the award categories included Most Dedicated Teacher Award and Iconic Teacher Award.
For Georgina, the most precious moments in her career come when she sees former students giving back to the community by being employed after graduating.
Another teacher, Robiana Lembang, expressed her pride in the school’s ability to celebrate important occasions like Teacher’s Day in a way that reflects its own meaningful way.
“The most wonderful thing is when a student recognises you and brings you a gift.
“It may not be the most expensive thing, but it never fails to make us smile,” she said.
For Robiana, the most rewarding part of her job is witnessing students develop basic skills from communication to self-care, which are milestones worth celebrating.
The day also included games played by both students and teachers, such as musical chairs and a rubber band-passing game using straws.
