KUCHING: A Ramadan tradition for over 30 years strengthens Islamic values and encourage the community to draw closer to the Quran.

The Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (PERKIM) Kuching Branch and the Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PAWE) chairwoman, Datuk Seri Sharifah Mordiah Tuanku Fauzi, said the Khatam Al-Quran ceremony is not merely a tradition, but a symbol of love and reverence for the Holy Quran.

“The programme not only symbolises the participants’ achievement in completing the recitation of the Quran, but has also been organised by PERKIM Kuching Branch for more than 30 years every Ramadan.

“Held in conjunction with the holy month of Ramadan, it aims to enliven Islamic values and inspire the community to engage more deeply with the Quran.

“It also reflects our commitment to enlivening the month of Ramadan by increasing our efforts in reading, understanding, and appreciating the words of Allah SWT in our daily live,” she said.

She said this during the 2026 Al-Quran Completion (Khatam Al-Quran) Ceremony and Hari Raya Contribution Presentation here at PAWE, Jalan Merak today.

The ceremony began around 8.30 am with a Khatam al-Quran recitation involving 60 members from PERKIM Kuching Branch and participants from PAWE Kuching.

The session was guided by Wan Muhammad Mujahid Wan Alwi from the Darul Hana Quran Development Centre under the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIC).

The event continued with the presentation of Hari Raya contributions to 31 recipients, along with donations to 60 participating PAWE and PERKIM members, presented by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

The 31 recipients included orphans, senior citizens, single mothers, and cancer patients.

The contributions were aimed at easing their burdens and bringing joy as they prepare for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“Although the contributions presented today may not be significant in value, it is hoped that they will help ease some of the recipients’ burdens and bring cheer as they prepare to celebrate the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“It is hoped that programmes like this will continue in the future to further strengthen ukhuwah (brotherhood), nurture the spirit of compassion and enhance the appreciation of the Quran in community life,” she said.

The programme was organised by the PERKIM Kuching Branch and PAWE Kuching, in collaboration with the Darul Hana Al-Quran Development Centre under MIC.
