ASAJAYA: The state government plans to set up a permanent temporary evacuation centre (PPS) in Long Busang, Belaga.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the said efforts are still being considered to ensure that there is an area for a permanent centre that is ready every time the rural areas are hit by floods.
“Long Busan experiences frequent floods, however the flood usually is not that long, it can be flooded today and tomorrow it will dry up.
“Now, we are looking into the need of setting up the centre there, but it is still under consideration,” he said when met by reporters after visiting PPS Sekolah Sampun Tepun here, on Sunday.
Uggah, who is also the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, said the government had provided a free radio online service operated by a non-profit organisation (NGO).
He said, the purpose of the free radio online service is for the community to contact the secretariat in the event of unforeseen circumstances happening during the floods.
“If there’s any problem during the flood, they can directly contact the secretariat.
“After that, we will respond to them and this effort acts as the communication centre that covers a vast area in the said rural areas,” he said.
Meanwhile, Uggah also said that the assistance of RM1,000 per family affected by floods, will be determined by the divisional Resident’s Office.
Therefore, he said flood victims are to register themselves at the Resident’s Office, to ensure that they do not miss out on getting the necessary assistance from the government.
Also accompanying Uggah during the visit was Minister of Youth, Sports and Entreprenuer Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
