PADAWAN: The third series of Pesta Makan Durian drew huge crowds, with more than 2,000 durians collected for the festival and enjoyed by visitors.

Mambong state assemblyman, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, said the event has been held for three consecutive years as part of ongoing efforts to promote local durian varieties while boosting agro-tourism and economic activity in the Padawan area.

He said durians from Kampung Sadir had been identified as among the finest varieties in the area, receiving positive feedback from both the Agriculture Department and consumers.

“Each year, Kampung Sadir produces a large volume of durians, often exceeding local market demand.

“To address this, we want to attract visitors from the city to come and purchase durians directly from villagers instead of relying solely on town markets.

“That is why we organise this event annually, and the response has been very encouraging,” he told reporters during the Pesta Makan Durian.

Dr Jerip also expressed hope that villagers would be encouraged to set up stalls in the future to sell durians during the festival period.

“Perhaps villagers can start selling their durians even a few days before the festival, allowing visitors to come earlier to make their purchases.

“More importantly, we want people to enjoy the beauty of the village, surrounded by lush greenery and hilly terrain. That is why we are promoting this place,” he said.

Meanwhile, infrastructure development remains a key focus to support long-term growth in the area, including road projects linking Tebedu, Temong, Tepoi, Sadir and Sibakar, which are currently being implemented in phases.

“Once completed, the improved road network is expected to significantly enhance accessibility to Kampung Sadir, further supporting tourism activities, agricultural trade and local economic development,” he added.

Dr Jerip said the festival is seen as an early step in introducing Kampung Sadir to a wider audience, with hopes that improved infrastructure and continued promotion will transform the area into a popular destination for fruit lovers and visitors alike.
