KUCHING: Pet Walk 2.0 was a lively success as it attracted a total of 1,052 participants, marking an increase compared to last year’s inaugural edition.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said he was pleased with the positive development as the event previously recorded only 802 participants, which is an impressive increase of 30.68 per cent.
At the same time, the number of pets also rose from 150 to 175, reflecting a growth of 16.67 per cent.

He said the increase, including the higher number of pets, reflected growing public awareness and strong support for responsible pet ownership and a healthy lifestyle.
“Events like this play an important role in bringing together families, pet owners and the general public in a positive and healthy environment.
“More importantly, it serves as a platform to raise awareness on public health issues, particularly rabies, which remains a concern in Sarawak,” he said.

He said this in a speech read by Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng at the launch of Pet Walk 2.0 at MBKS Foyer today (April 26).
He added that the Sarawak Government has taken a firm and proactive approach in tackling rabies through comprehensive and integrated programmes, including mass vaccination campaigns, enforcement measures, public education and collaboration among various agencies and local authorities.

“Our goal is clear, that is to move towards the eradication of rabies in Sarawak. However, this goal cannot be achieved by the government alone; it requires cooperation and commitment from the community, especially pet owners.
“Responsible ownership, including regular vaccination, proper care and monitoring of pets, is crucial in safeguarding public health,” he said.
Dr Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said the initiative aligns with Sarawak’s long-term development agenda under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which envisions a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable state.
“Public health, community wellbeing and environmental responsibility are key pillars in achieving this aspiration.
“Programmes like PET WALK contribute directly to a healthy lifestyle, social unity and the development of a caring and responsible society, while also recognising the important role of pets in our lives,” he said.
He also expressed enthusiasm over the organisers’ vision to transform 2027 Pet Walk 3.0 into PET Carnival Day.
“This is a positive and forward-looking initiative that will further strengthen community engagement, education and awareness through a more comprehensive and inclusive platform,” he said.
Earlier, Pet Walk 2.0 also successfully raised RM12,500 in support of the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), helping efforts to care for and protect animals, reflecting a strong spirit of compassion among the people in the state.
