LAWAS: The Phase Two infrastructure upgrade of the Kampung Petarikan market in Merapok has reached about 80 per cent completion and is targeted for completion by the end of this month.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the project would provide improved facilities for the local community.
He said the facilities should also be properly utilised and maintained to ensure they continue benefiting residents in the long term.
“The facilities developed must be utilised and cared for together with the community so that their benefits can be enjoyed in the long term,” he said, according to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
He said this during a visit to several development projects in Merapok and its surrounding areas on Wednesday (Sept 9).
The market project includes the construction of concrete flooring, pillars and roofing, new toilets, drainage, gabion walls and concrete walkways.
It also involves landscaping works as well as water and electricity supply.
During the visit, Awang Tengah also inspected education facilities at SK Merapok implemented by the Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA) under the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA).
The RM1.67 million project, comprising two teachers’ quarters, a kindergarten building and four new toilets, has been fully completed.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Premier encouraged residents to make greater use of land and new technologies to expand agricultural activities in the area.
He said infrastructure development, including the Northern Coastal Highway (NCH), is expected to create more economic opportunities for local communities.
