KUCHING: Strengthening leadership, expanding community partnerships and ensuring sustainable growth will be the key priorities for the Petra Jaya District Scouts Council under its first-ever president, Dayang Norjihan Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
She said her appointment marked not only a personal honour but also a significant milestone for the district’s Scout movement, as the council officially welcomed its inaugural president to lead the organisation into a new phase of development.
She described the occasion as a historic moment for the Petra Jaya Scout movement, expressing hope that it would serve as the foundation for greater achievements in the years ahead.
“This is more than a formal ceremony. It is a historic moment for the Petra Jaya Scout movement because, for the first time, the position of District Scouts Council President has been filled.
“I hope this milestone will pave the way for greater achievements and continued progress in the years ahead,” she said during the presentation of appointment certificates for the Petra Jaya District Scouts Council for the 2026–2028 term at Dormani Hotel on Monday (July 27).
In her inaugural address, Dayang Norjihan outlined three key priorities that will shape her administration, namely strengthening financial resources and infrastructure, expanding collaboration with the community, and enhancing the welfare and training of Scout leaders and members.
She said a sound financial position and adequate facilities are crucial to ensuring Scout programmes can be carried out effectively while creating more opportunities for youth development.
She also stressed the importance of fostering stronger partnerships with government agencies, the private sector, parents and local communities to broaden the reach and impact of scouting activities throughout Petra Jaya.
“My priority is to build an administration that is strong, transparent and dynamic. The District Scouts Council will serve as the backbone in securing funding and strengthening community partnerships to ensure scouting activities continue to grow.”
She added that the welfare and continuous training of Scout leaders and members would remain a priority, enabling them to enhance their skills and achieve the highest levels of recognition within the Scout movement.
Highlighting the importance of teamwork, she said the success of any organisation depends on the collective commitment, unity and dedication of its members rather than on a single leader.
She expressed confidence that the Scout movement’s core values of unity, volunteerism and teamwork would propel the Petra Jaya District Scouts Council to greater success and inspire other Scout districts across Sarawak.
During the ceremony, Dayang Norjihan was also conferred the Bintang Pengakap Kenyalang Sarawak Medal and the Special Scout Appreciation Medal in recognition of her contributions and commitment to the Scout movement.
