TOKYO: A Sarawak delegation, led by Deputy State Secretary Datuk Seri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, successfully engaged with HighChem Company Limited (HC) to explore potential collaborations and partnerships in the petrochemical sector.

The meeting, held on Tuesday (Feb 25) at HighChem’s headquarters in Tokyo Toranomon Global Square, focused on ongoing projects between Sarawak Petchem and HighChem, while also identifying new avenues for cooperation.

Key discussions centred on SEG and PX business opportunities, following the signing of a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and a presentation on HighChem’s business profile.

Sarawak Petchem is actively pursuing a collaboration with HighChem to establish Sarawak’s first-ever Ethylene Glycol project, aimed at bolstering the state’s petrochemical industry and supporting the Sarawak Gas Roadmap.

This initiative is expected to enhance the petrochemical and downstream manufacturing sectors in Bintulu.

The discussion follows Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s official visit in December last year.

Both parties also explored additional collaborations, including hydrogen electrolysis and other advanced technological initiatives.

As part of their visit to Japan, the Sarawak delegation is set to tour a pilot plant to further solidify partnership efforts and assess practical applications of the discussed opportunities.

The meeting was deemed a success, paving the way for strengthened collaboration between Sarawak and HighChem in advancing the state’s petrochemical sector.

The delegation also included Permanent Secretary for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak Datuk Abg Ahmad Abg Morni, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, Sarawak Forest Department Director Datuk Hamden Mohammad, Sarawak Biodiversity Centre Chief Executive Officer Datuk Dr Charlie Yeo, and Sarawak Petchem Managing Director and CEO Datuk Mohammad Ibrahim.
