KUCHING: PETRONAS, through its social impact arm, Yayasan PETRONAS, has distributed 1,150 care packages to Sarawak as part of a nationwide flood relief effort, with 950 packages already channelled to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) across several divisions as of January 12.

The company said the initiative is part of a total of 8,750 care packages distributed nationwide to support communities affected by flooding, particularly during the northeast monsoon season.

The care packages, which include daily essentials and personal hygiene items, were handed over to the Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS) in November 2025 and stored at designated JKM depot centres across the state to ensure quick mobilisation during emergencies.

Among the items included are towels, blankets, mineral water, cutlery, sanitary pads, diapers, wet wipes, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

PETRONAS said JKMS will distribute the supplies to the respective PPS whenever needed, depending on the situation on the ground.

A total of 950 care packages were distributed to evacuation centres in Miri, Bintulu, Mukah and Samarahan divisions by January 12.

PETRONAS Sarawak’s General Manager, Norazibah M. Rabu, said the company remains committed to supporting the Sarawak government in easing the burden faced by flood-affected communities.

“Through our coordination with JKMS, we hope the care packages distributed can offer a measure of comfort and reassurance to those impacted,” she said.

Norazibah also urged the public to stay alert amid concerns of a possible second wave of flooding linked to the king tide, as cautioned by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee.

“With the possibility of a second wave of flooding due to the king tide, we urge the public to remain vigilant,” she said.

“In times of crisis, we stand together with the people of Sarawak, ready to respond whenever and wherever support is needed.”

The company said the distribution was informed by lessons learned from Sarawak’s major floods early last year, when heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in several areas, including Bintulu.

Bintulu was among the worst-hit locations, experiencing what was described as an unprecedented “great flood” after nearly 900mm of rain fell within a single day, forcing families to evacuate and damaging homes, furniture and vehicles.

At the height of the crisis, 57 temporary evacuation centres were opened across the state to accommodate thousands of displaced residents.

PETRONAS said it was among the organisations mobilised on the ground during the disaster, alongside government agencies, local communities, corporations and non-governmental organisations, to ensure assistance reached affected families.

The company added that improved coordination and preparedness measures have since strengthened its response to subsequent flood events.
