SIBU: A total of 60 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) kits worth about RM1.2 million, contributed by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), will be distributed to schools across Sarawak starting January next year.
Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the initiative marked an important first step to ensure schools in Sarawak are equipped with the basic tools needed to strengthen science education.
“Each kit costs between RM20,000 and RM25,000 and contains more than 50 items, including microscopes and test tubes, to support hands-on science learning in schools,” he said.
He told reporters this after officiating at the STEM Carnival Day 2025 at SK Sungai Pasai here on Wednesday (Nov 12).
Dr Annuar said the ministry is currently drafting an implementation mechanism to ensure the distribution and usage of the STEM kits are properly coordinated by all District Education Offices (PPD).
“For instance, some PPDs in urban areas may face space constraints.
“So, we are proposing that selected schools be tasked with storing and maintaining the equipment, allowing other schools to borrow the kits when needed,” he added.
