BINTULU: Petronas’ upskilling programme continues to prove its effectiveness as a catalyst for life transformation, particularly for youth from rural areas of Sarawak.

By offering technical training and job guarantees, this programme provides participants with a fresh start to build careers in the oil and gas sector and other industries.

Elvis Daring

For Elvis Daring, 21, from Long Seridan, the programme became an escape route from a challenging life.

Starting as a Food Panda rider in Miri for two years, he is now working as a scaffolder at Malaysia LNG under the company Kejuruteraan Gemilang Jaya (KGJ), after completing the Petronas-organised Upskilling Scaffolding Level 1 Programme.

“I never imagined I would be here, but I’m grateful this opportunity has changed my life.

“I first learned about the programme through my friend, Franklyn, who shared the information with me. I signed up and attended the 30-day course in May. That decision changed my life,” he said gratefully.

Elvis initially did not expect to be interested in scaffolding, but this opportunity opened new doors that not only improved his financial situation but also gave him the confidence to build a career in the oil and gas sector.

“This initiative has given me a better life. I hope more young people will seize opportunities like this to change their futures,” added the young Kelabit.

Maxmayer Mereten, 27, from Ba’Kelalan, also shared his transformation story after joining the programme.

“Previously, I was just a vegetable cutter in my village. Now, I’m ready to enter the oil and gas sector. My advice to village youth is, don’t be afraid to step out and try. The outside world offers great opportunities for a better future,” he said.
