MIRI: The first phase of the river deepening project in the Batang Baram Delta is expected to be completed in March next year.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi said the project which began in July last year is being steadily implemented and currently ahead of schedule.
“This is a proud achievement resulting from close collaboration between the Miri Port Authority (MPA), consultants, contractors and all stakeholders.
“This project will have a major impact on the port’s capacity, trade growth and socio-economic opportunities in the Miri area and its surroundings,” he said.
Majang, who represented Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, said this at a multi-faith blessing ceremony at the Batang Baram Delta on Thursday (May 15).

The ceremony marked the commencement of the river deepening project and related works being carried out by MPA.
“The river deepening project is one of the strategic initiatives of the Sarawak government to improve the operational efficiency of Miri Port and stimulate economic development in the northern part of the state,” he said.
On the multi-faith blessing ceremony, he said it reflected the spirit of unity and harmony of the people of different races and religions in Sarawak.
“Today’s ceremony showcases the beauty of the diversity of religions and cultures in the state.
“The ‘doa selamat’ led by the Muslim community, followed by Christian blessings, Taoist prayers and the Iban ‘miring’ ritual by the Dayak community, are not just traditions, but a manifestation of our belief in the power of prayer and God’s blessings in every development project,” he said.
