KUCHING: Sarawak’s Philomena Dexclyn Siar aims to defend her gold and conquer four categories at the 16th World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championships in Batam, Indonesia, showcasing unwavering dedication despite financial hurdles.

The championship, held from November 11 to 17 at Batam City in Riau Province, Indonesia, sees Philomena competing in Mixed Pair alongside Dr Malvern Abdullah, Women’s Sport Physique up to 165cm, Women’s Ladies Sport Physique for 35 years and above, and Women’s Wellness Open categories.

“My goal is to win every category and retain my gold from last year. I am committed to giving my best in every event,” said Philomena when contacted by Sarawak Tribune today.

Philomena revealed that her preparation for this championship has been a year-round effort, starting from January 2025, with no breaks after also preparing for the Asia Championship in Bangkok last August.

“Preparation has been very challenging, especially with limited financial support for elite athletes. Even as the reigning world champion, I had to find my own sponsors to compete on the world stage,” she said.

To raise funds, Philomena increased her personal training hours, sold pre-owned items, and offered corporate fitness programmes as part of sponsor packages.

“Representing Sarawak and Malaysia at the world level is the highest honour and a prestigious platform to showcase our talents,” she added.

Joining Philomena in the competition are fellow Sarawak athletes, Dr Malvern Abdullah, Awang Mohd Azizul, and Siti Hajar, who will also be representing Malaysia at the event.

Sarawak’s strong presence at the championship highlights the state’s growing reputation in the international bodybuilding and physique scene, driven by athletes like Philomena who continue to break barriers through passion and perseverance.
