KUCHING: Tutus, chicken costumes, and plenty of laughter took over Padang Merdeka as ‘Pickled On The Streets’ turned pickleball into a community spectacle at this year’s What About Kuching (WAK) Festival.
Organised by WAK Festival, in partnership with The Podium Project, the event was held yesterday (Oct 5) in conjunction with the Kuching North City Commission’s (DBKU) Car-Free Morning.
Tournament director Emmanuel David said the aim was to keep the event community-focused and fun, which inspired unique categories such as /Adult + Junior, Ladies in Pink Tutus, and Sabong Doubles/, where one player wears a chicken costume and the other a farmer’s hat.
“This event proves that even with a pop-up Pickleball court, meaningful and engaging activities can be held. It has only strengthened our determination to continue organising community-driven events,” Emmanuel said in a statement recently.
He said the success of ‘Pickled On The Streets’ demonstrates how sports, creativity, and community spirit can come together to create unforgettable experiences for participants and spectators alike.
“We received great responses from both the public and seasoned pickleball players. The event categories were decided by the organising committee from the WAK festival, in collaboration with The Podium Project.
“We would also like to acknowledge PULSE, Sportsdeal, and Pikabol for their generous support in providing sports equipment and technical sponsorship,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to What About Kuching (WAK), DBKU, and the Kuching Pickleball Association (KPA) for their continuous support.
