SIBU: The newly constructed pickleball court at Catholic High School marks a significant step forward in promoting the sport in Sibu.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Chieng Jin Ek, during the handover ceremony on Tuesday (Feb 25), revealed that the court’s construction is part of a broader initiative to introduce pickleball at the school level.
He highlighted that the school is now the second educational institution in Sarawak to have a dedicated pickleball court, following Riam Hill International School in Miri.
Chieng expressed confidence that the availability of this facility would encourage more students to participate in the rapidly growing sport.
“This is a great achievement for the development of pickleball sports in Sibu.
“With this special court, more students are able to participate and hone their talents in the sport.”
In its initial phase, 10 schools have been selected to establish pickleball clubs as a starting point for the sport’s expansion.
Additionally, he announced plans to organise Sibu’s first inter-school pickleball tournament, tentatively scheduled for September, pending approval from the Department of Education.
Chieng hopes that more schools in Sibu will soon have access to similar facilities, allowing greater student participation while fostering a culture of physical activity and healthy living among the younger generation.
