PUSA: The pineapple-based industry in Beting Maro is now seen as more than just agriculture as it holds significant potential to drive the local economy through the production of high-value products, including woven fabric made from pineapple leaf fibres.
Betong Maro assemblyman Razaili Gapor said efforts to develop the pineapple product value chain will not stop at basic processing courses but will continue in stages with support from various stakeholders, including the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM).
“Pineapple-based products are not only for consumption as they carry substantial value internationally, especially textiles woven from pineapple leaf fibres.
“This presents new income-generating opportunities for the community, particularly for the youth,” he said during the closing ceremony of the Non-Food Pineapple Product Processing Course held here recently.
He added that several initiatives are in the pipeline, including upcoming weaving courses in keringkam and songket, aimed at expanding skills and economic options for the local population.
Razaili thanked the trainers and participants of the course, describing their dedication as an important first step toward establishing a sustainable pineapple industry ecosystem in the area.
