BINTULU: Sarawak Skills Bintulu recently held a briefing and working visit for the Pineapple Cultivation Technology Management Course, aimed at modernising pineapple farming through technology and vocational training.

The event, held in partnership with the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM), was officiated by Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, who emphasised the importance of integrating technology and skills development in agriculture.

Roland praised both organisations for creating a course that combines agricultural technology, innovation, and technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

“As we move forward under PCDS 2030, Sarawak’s transformation depends heavily on talent, technology, and training,” he said, noting that while the state has advanced in technical fields, innovation must also extend to agriculture, particularly in high-value crops like pineapple.

The minister highlighted that the future of farming relies on technology adoption, data-driven decision-making, and skilled workers capable of managing farms using modern systems.

“The days of relying solely on traditional methods are over. Our farms must operate like smart industries using automation, sensors, and digital management tools,” he added.

Roland described the pineapple technology course as timely and strategic, equipping smallholders, youth, and entrepreneurs with skills in smart farming, productivity, and agricultural management.

He also commended Sarawak Skills Bintulu for its growth as a northern hub for technical training and noted that its recent MoU with ADTEC Bintulu supports the Ministry’s goal of building a synergised, industry-driven TVET ecosystem across digital technology, agriculture, and green innovation.

Looking ahead, the Minister encouraged Sarawak Skills, LPNM, and industry partners to expand training access for rural communities, integrate digital tools such as IoT and drones into agricultural modules, and ensure that all training enhances employability, entrepreneurship, and sustainable community development.

“By integrating agriculture, technology, and vocational training, we can empower Sarawakians not only to work in industries but to become innovators and agri-entrepreneurs,” he said.

Also present at the event was Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development II (Talent Development), Sarawak.
