KUCHING: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak branch recently launched the Samarahan Tourism Development Lab in collaboration with the Samarahan Division Resident Office.

Some 300 participants from various government and private agencies attended the five-day programme held at a hotel here from Apr 5 to 9.

UiTM Sarawak branch, in a statement, said the programme was divided into two sessions, namely Session One on April 5 to 7 and Session Two on Apr 7 to 9 with standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place.

The main goal of the programme was to share research results with the participants and to further plan sustainable tourism development for Samarahan division.

The programme also allowed participants to identify potential tourism products for the tourism ecosystem in Samarahan division.

“Participants will identify potential tourism products that can be expanded in their respective areas as well as on how to enhance existing tourism products to suit the tourism market needs.

“Moreover, they will also be able to determine the relevant supporting system to develop tourism products and propose a programme of capacity enhancement for the community in line with the tourism ecosystem in the division,” UiTM Sarawak branch said.

The university noted that Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri had expressed her support for the programme.

“The minister, who is also Batong Sadong MP, had urged the participants to take advantage of this opportunity and to support the government’s initiatives in the efforts to develop the community’s economy.

“She also stated that the government is always committed to improving and safeguarding the welfare of the local community in the pursuit of developing Sarawak, especially the Samarahan division,” it said.
